Can My New Landlord Change My Rent ?

Apartment Listing

A landlord has the right to change the rent plan as mentioned in the agreement and beyond that they cannot revise. Any landlord has a legal right to increase the rent once a year or every 20 months by a specified percentage that is legally allowed.

The person should have stayed in the rental home for at least one year or more. A new landlord would mean that the tenant has just moved in and it is less than six months since they have started using the facilities. In such a case the landlord does not have a right to change the rent plan or increase it. However, if the landlord has miscalculated or mentioned the wrong amount by mistake on the rental agreement, then they can have it changed legally in which case the tenant has to agree to pay the mentioned amount or vacate the house.

However, in any other case were there has been no mistake and initially it was mutually agreed upon in negotiations that the tenant would pay a certain amount as rent and the same amount has been mentioned on the agreement, then the landlord does not have the right to change the amount later until the right time arrives.

It is very important for the tenant to ask for the copy of a rental agreement and keep it with them. Even if someone has tampered with the rental agreement, one copy is still held by the tenant and in that case he or she cannot be cheated.
