Fish Tank And Mold Allergy

Apartment Listing

Molds love water and thrive in just about any place that has moisture. If you own a fish tank at home, you would have noticed brown, black or green discolorations on the sides and the floor of the aquarium. If you are naturally prone to different types of allergies, then cleaning your fish tank on a regular basis is highly recommended.

Sometimes, these molds also grow on the decorative pieces that have been placed inside the tank to make the aquarium look attractive. You would even find these microorganisms growing on sea plants.

If you are suddenly experiencing flu-like symptoms, but are not able to find the root cause, blame it directly on the molds that are growing in your fish tank. Watery eyes, running nose, sore throats, difficulty in breathing, cough, irritation and redness of eyes, are common symptoms associated with mold allergies. Mold spores travel in air and are invisible to human eyes. Therefore, detection of spores is quite difficult and you may have to call in an expert to address the seriousness of the issue. Molds on the other hand grow in large groups and therefore are easily detectable. They also appear as powdery substances.

In order to prevent mold infestations in your fish tanks, it is advisable to change the water often. Also, change the filter’s media periodically at least once in a month unless otherwise mentioned in your instructions manual. Always remember to keep the lid of the tank as well as the underside of the lid dry. Wipe it regularly with a dry cloth.
