Different Types Of Turtles
Turtles can be classified in different ways, depending upon either their habitat or eating habits. In terms of habitat, there are two types of turtles that are found on this planet. These are fresh water turtles, which are found mostly in rivers and ponds, and the salt water turtles, which dwell in oceans and seas. |
At present, there are as many as 300 species of turtles all over the world. They are considered to be one of the oldest creatures to be living on this planet at present. Generally, the sea or ocean dwelling turtles are bigger in size, and have a tougher shell compared to the turtles that are found in rivers or ponds. Nevertheless, both types of turtles face danger from poachers, who kill them either for their meat or for their shell casing.
In addition to their classification as fresh water or sea water creatures, they are also classified into other groups. In places like the United States, there are a large number of turtles called Chicken Turtles whose bodies are stripped, and have a relatively longer neck. The other types of turtles include Painted Turtles, Graptemys, Trachemys and Trachemys Gaigeae.
Turtles are known to have a long life. As compared to freshwater turtles, the ones living in sea are known to live for more than two centuries. The size and weight of the turtles vary from few inches and grams to several feet in diameter and kilograms in weight. Nevertheless, they are considered to be an important part of the ecological system in seas, rivers and ponds.
