African Plated Lizards
The African Plated Lizard is also generally known as Great Plated Lizard or Sudan Plated Lizard. It is a heavy lizard with a cylindrical body which is primarily found in Eastern and Southeastern Africa. Its body has belly scales arranged in ten rows which help it to move on uneven surfaces with ease. This diurnal reptile ekes out its living in underground burrows. |
The tail of African Plated Lizard comes to its rescue when it encounters any danger. Its living is sophisticated that it shares its burrow with a snake or even a mongoose.
As these reptiles are considered aggressive among themselves, the occurrences of two or more of them living together are very rare. In addition, if a younger lizard is made to coexist with an older one, the possibilities of any dangerous instances are even more. The largest members of African Plated Lizards species can grow up to a length of nearly 70 cm.
The grooves in the body of an African Plated Lizard perform as enhanced joints for female carrying eggs or for putting up internal pressure after meal. The head of the reptile is short, while it has large eyes. Specifically, the tail is almost double that of the actual body size when measured.
This reptile comes under the list omnivorous and eats insects such as mealworms, crickets, mealworm wax worms, beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, and fruit like strawberries, bananas, cantaloupe, apple, peach, and tomato.
The female African Plated Lizards normally lays 2 eggs, but some are able to lay up to 4 large eggs in damp type of soil.
