How Can I Tell If My Dog Had A Stroke ?
Just like humans, dogs too suffer stroke attacks. Called canine strokes, the symptoms, however, may differ from human stroke cases. Stoke is a health condition wherein the flow of blood to the brain is disrupted leading to stoppage in brain activities creating serious problems in vision, physical and mental balances, and general behavior. |
Generally, if a dog is suffering from kidney related problem, heart related disease, Cushing’s disease, diabetes or thyroid dysfunction, there are higher chances that these diseases could result in strokes.Canine strokes, if not properly treated, can lead to death.
There are two types of canine strokes, and both are very serious. One type of canine stroke occurs when the brain is prevented from getting blood due to a blocked artery. The second type of canine stroke happens when there is a brain hemorrhage where blood from blood vessels starts to pool around and in the brain.
Symptoms of a stroke in dogs might be difficult to spot during the initial stages. Some of the common symptoms of canine strokes include when the dog tilts his head or turns the wrong way when the pet owner calls him. Tilting of head is a sign of dizziness, and when it is coupled with a notable loss of balance and/or vision, it forces the dogs to circle and fall frequently. A dog might have stroke attacks, but still not show any signs of facial weakness or eye drooping like in humans. However, other visible symptoms of strokes in dogs include eating from one side of the food bowl or unusual falls.
In extreme cases of stroke attacks, the symptoms will be very much visible like the dog will feel very tired, there might be no control over his bowel movements and some dogs might even lose their vision.
Any dog breed, if it is very young or very old, is susceptible to stroke attacks. However, pugs and bulldogs, whose respiratory pathways are narrow, are particularly more susceptible to strokes. Dogs also suffer from strokes if exposed to extreme temperatures.
