In beginning period of cat gestation, the signs of pregnancy are almost impossible to notice.
Signs of a Cat’s Pregnancy:
- Heat Cycles Stop: Naturally, a female cat will go thorough heat cycles every 10 – 14 days. If the cycle suddenly stops and the cat is sexually active, the change of pregnancy is high.
- Nipple Swell & Color Change: Nipple of pregnant cat will swell noticeably. They will also likely to turn into pink color.
- Increased Appetite: Pregnant cat will get hungry more often. It will eat more for herself and her babies.
- Possible Morning Sickness: Like human, cat is a mammal, and new mother also experiences morning sickness and possible vomiting. If this happens, there is no need to panic.
- Abdominal Enlargement: Cat’s abdomen will get bigger around the 5th week of pregnancy. It will keep getting bigger until the time of birth.
- Personality Changes: The chance is the pregnant cat will become quieter and sleep more. Pregnant queen also tend to be more affectionate than normal. Don’t be surprised if she seeks your attention.
In rare cases, some cats may show false signs of pregnancy without being pregnant. False pregnancy is more likely to occur in dogs, but it can also happen in cats. If you are unsure, talk to your veterinary. Your vet can run a test to make sure. If the cat is pregnant around 17th – 20th day, you veterinarian can gently press the cat’s abdomen to feel the fetus. Other diagnostic tools are ultrasound. Ultrasound can detect pregnancy after the 3rd week.
