Healthy Cat Weight
Obesity in cats is a very common health condition that requires treatment. According to a study conducted in 2008, 57 percent of the US cats were overweight. And it is also a fact that obesity in cats could be caused by a dozen reasons. Hence, finding out the right reason and acting accordingly will go a long way in managing the right weight in your cat. |
However, how to find out if a cat is obese. What is the ideal weight for a cat? Well, the ideal weight for a cat varies from one cat to another. However, based on two factors, the breed of the cat and the sex of the cat, the ideal weight could be determined.
The breed of the cat is one of the commonest parameters applied in calculating the ideal weight of a pet cat. For example, the ideal weight of a fully grown male Maine Coon, which belongs to the larger breeds of cats, can be around 18 pounds or 8 kilos. And, in the case of a female cat of the Singapura breed, which is a smaller breed, even a mere 7 pounds or 3 kilos could be considered as overweight.
Not considering the purebred cats, the ideal weight in mixed breeds should be between 8 to 12 pounds or between 3.5 to 5.5 kilos. Of course, this to a large extent depends on the bone structure in the cat.
Another important parameter to be considered in calculating ideal weight for cats is its sex. Males and females of the same breed could weigh differently with the males usually weighing 2 to 4 pounds more than their female counterparts.
In order to find out a cat’s weight, the cat should be checked in the following way. If one could feel the ribs of the cats and count it when moving the hands along the sides of the cat’s body, then the cat’s weight could be considered as ideal. Usually, the ribs on a healthy cat are covered with a layer of fat, but not so much fat so as to make it difficult to feel the ribs.
Cats that are overweight have larger abdomen, and have difficulty in walking and grooming themselves.
Changes in diet, spaying or neutering a cat could also help in weight management. Apart from these, creating the right and happy environment for cats also play a role in weight management.
