Information On Toucan Birds
They croak like a frog and are very noisy. They are playful and people find them cute. They live in the rainforest of Central and South America. They are the Toucan birds. Their long colorful beaks are very light. Believe it or not, they are made of the same substance as your fingernails, that is, keratin. To make it strong, the keratin beak also has thin strips of bone. |
Their beak is a mystery as it is not a specialized tool to collect food. Nor do they use it as a weapon to ward off predators. Both male and female have the same kind of beak. So, it is not even a distinguishing factor to separate the male from the female. They use their bills when playing with each other.
They are friendly birds, and live with their mate or in small flocks of 3 to 12. They stay high up in the trees, and follow one another from tree to tree. They sleep in tree holes, whatever the size may be. If the hole is too small, they make themselves smaller by rolling into a small feathery ball. They will twist their beaks around and will rest it on their backs. The tail will be folded under their breast.
Their diet consists of fruits, insects, reptiles, insects and rodents. They even feed on other smaller and weaker birds, eggs and nestlings. Hence they are omnivorous creatures.
Today, the toucan population has gone down because of deforestation, especially in Central America.
Their main predators are other birds of prey, such as eagles and hawks, and big cats, namely the jaguar.
